EU ministers impose new sanctions against Iran

European Union ministers agreed on a new package of sanctions against Iran, the Swedish EU presidency said on January 23.

"Ministers approved a new package of sanctions against Iran, targeting those who incite repression. The EU strongly condemns the brutal and disproportionate use of force by the Iranian authorities against peaceful protesters," the Swedish presidency said in a tweet, without giving other details.

Sources told Reuters news agency last week that EU foreign ministers will add 37 individuals to the EU sanctions list against Iran on January 23.

At least 522 people have been killed during four months of protests against Iran's government, according to reports by the US-based HRANA. Nearly 20,000 people have been arrested, of which 110 have charges that could result in death sentences.

According to the data, four protesters have already been executed.

Protests have been held in more than 160 cities since their launch in September last year.

The protests were prompted by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, Kurdish-Iranian, while she was in police custody, on the grounds that she did not put the veil on her head properly./REL
