The Israeli prime minister fires an important ally from the cabinet

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired a key cabinet ally on Sunday, enforcing a Supreme Court ruling and deepening the debate over the power of the courts.

Mr. Netanyahu announced during a cabinet meeting that he was dismissing the Minister of Interior and Health, Mr. Aryeh Deri. Israel's Supreme Court ruled last week that Mr. Deri could not serve as minister because of a tax-related conviction last year.

The court's decision comes while there are disputes in the country regarding the power of the judiciary.

Mr. Deri's dismissal is also expected to shake up the ruling coalition, a government supported by ultra-nationalist and ultra-Orthodox parties, including Mr. Deri's Shas party, the third-largest in government.

While some lawmakers from the Shas party threatened to break up the coalition after the court ruling, the government is expected to survive Mr. Deri's absence. The coalition is likely to try to draft legislation that would pave the way for Mr. Deri's swift return.

It is expected that Mr. Netanyahu will appoint another member of Shas to replace Mr. Deri, at least temporarily./ VOA
