UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Wednesday for an end to the fighting in Sudan and for international support for the Sudanese people, who he said are facing a humanitarian catastrophe.
"Aid must be allowed into Sudan, and we need safe and immediate access to be able to distribute it to the people who need it most," Guterres said during a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya. . "Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected, and aid workers and their assets must be respected."
Sudan's Health Ministry says more than 500 people have been killed and about 5,000 injured since fighting began on April 15 in a power struggle between leaders of Sudanese government forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force. The UN Migration Agency (IOM) said this week that at least 334,000 people have been internally displaced by the fighting, along with 100,000 others who have fled the country. The UN refugee agency has warned that the fighting could force more than 800,000 people to flee the northeast African country.
Many go to the seven countries that border Sudan, including Chad, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Egypt and Ethiopia.
Recent attempts at a ceasefire
South Sudan's foreign ministry announced on Tuesday that Sudan's army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, head of the paramilitary Rapid Support Force, have agreed to a new one-week ceasefire starting effective Thursday.
The UN chief expressed concern that previous ceasefires have been repeatedly violated and he urged the international community to put pressure on the two generals to respect and implement the agreement.
South Sudanese President Salva Kiir stressed the importance of a longer ceasefire and the appointment of envoys for peace talks, which both sides agreed to.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said his government would support talks in Sudan between the rival factions, adding that he "is careful not to interfere in their internal affairs".
"The whole region could be affected," he said in an interview Tuesday with a Japanese newspaper, as an envoy from Sudan's army chief met with Egyptian officials in Cairo.
Humanitarian operations
The head of UN humanitarian operations, Martin Griffiths, spent Wednesday in Port Sudan - the Sudanese city on the Red Sea where the UN and many non-governmental organizations have moved their operations from Khartoum.
Mr Griffiths and the head of the UN in Sudan, Volker Perthes, spoke by phone to the parties.
