Russia: NATO is preparing for a possible conflict with us

NATO military exercises that began four months ago near the border with Russia - known as Steadfast Defender - are evidence that the Western military alliance is preparing for a possible conflict with Russia, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said on the 4th May.

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed accusations made by NATO this week that Russia is involved in hybrid attacks against alliance member states, saying it was "disinformation" aimed at distracting people from the activities of the Western military alliance.

Through a statement, Zakharova said that it is NATO that has engaged in a hybrid war against Russia through the support it gives to Ukraine by providing it with weapons, intelligence and money.

"Currently, NATO's largest exercise since the Cold War, Steadfast Defender, is being held close to Russia's borders. According to their scenario, coalition actions against Russia are being practiced using all instruments, including hybrid and conventional weapons," she said.

"We must admit that NATO is seriously preparing 'for a possible conflict' with us," added Zakharova.

Relations between Russia and the West are at their lowest point in decades following the launch of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

When announcing the launch of the exercises in January, NATO said 90,000 troops would take part. During the exercises, according to NATO, it will be practiced how US troops can reinforce European allies in the states that border Russia and those on the eastern flank of the alliance if a conflict were to occur. The exercises will last throughout May. /REL
