Russia: Massive attack across Kiev / One person killed, 24 others injured

Russia has launched a massive drone and missile attack on Kiev, killing one person and wounding at least 24 others, according to Ukraine's state emergency service.

More than 40 people were also rescued as a result of the attack, which began on Thursday night and lasted until the early hours of Friday. The attack reportedly caused fires and damage to residential buildings in many neighborhoods of the Ukrainian capital.

"The Russians are hitting residential buildings. There are many damaged high-rise buildings all over Kiev, in almost every neighborhood," said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration.

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said a pregnant woman and a man in extremely serious condition were among those hospitalized. Klitschko also confirmed that the Russian attack had damaged part of the city's heating networks, noting that several buildings in the northeastern Desnianskyi neighborhood were temporarily left without heat.

Ahead of another winter of war, Moscow has intensified its attacks on targets, including Ukraine's energy infrastructure, increasing the risk of heating outages.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had shot down more than 200 Ukrainian drones overnight.

"Last night, air defense assets intercepted and destroyed 216 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles ," she wrote on Telegram.

The latest attack on Kiev comes two days after G7 foreign ministers reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and called for an immediate ceasefire. /CNA
