German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to take decisive action against corruption scandals that have rocked Kiev after the revelation of bribes worth around $100 million at a state-owned nuclear power company.
The Ukrainian government is under pressure this week after the revelation of a widespread bribery scheme at the state-owned nuclear power company, reportedly worth up to $100 million. Although Volodymyr Zelensky is not directly involved in the case, the scandal affects people close to him and has already led to the resignation of two ministers.
In this context, Merz's spokesman stated that in the telephone conversation, the Chancellor underlined the German government's expectations that Ukraine will resolutely advance the fight against corruption and continue reforms, especially in the area of ??the rule of law.
Germany remains the largest European provider of military assistance to Ukraine. According to Merz's spokesman, Zelensky assured the German Chancellor that he is committed to full transparency, long-term support for independent anti-corruption authorities and immediate action to restore the trust of the Ukrainian people, European partners and international donors.
The Ukrainian President also expressed his gratitude for German military assistance, especially in the areas of air defense and protection of Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
At the same time, Merz stressed that Germany, together with its Western partners, will increase pressure on Moscow to persuade Russia to engage in meaningful negotiations, adding that discussions are also continuing on the more effective use of frozen Russian state assets. /CNA
