Kazakhstan/US plane crash: Russia may be responsible

The spokesman of the White House, John Kirby, has stated that the United States of America has early indications that Russia may be responsible for the downing of the plane in Kazakhstan.

The Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashed on December 25 near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people.

John Kirby declined to give more details, but said the US had provided assistance in the crash investigation.

The plane is believed to have been hit by Russian air defense systems as it attempted to land in Chechnya before diverting across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan, where it crashed.

The Kremlin has declined to comment, but the head of Russia's civil aviation agency said the situation in Chechnya was "very complicated" because of attacks by Ukrainian jets in the region. /CNA
