Over 90,000 registered to vote from the diaspora

The Central Election Commission has announced that the process of registering voters outside Kosovo has ended at midnight.

"According to preliminary data, the number of citizens of Kosovo who have registered as voters outside of Kosovo in the period August 29 - December 26, 2024, until 23:59 is 90,860, while the number of applications that are under review is 18,244," he said. said the spokesperson of the CEC, Valmir Elezi.

Elezi announced that the review of received applications will continue on December 27 and then the CEC will have a final report on the number of Kosovo citizens registered to vote from abroad.

On December 26, the ruling party Vetëvendosje Movement said it intended to extend the registration period for voters outside Kosovo until Sunday. However, the meeting of the CEC failed because the representatives of the opposition parties did not participate in it.

Kosovo will hold regular parliamentary elections on February 9, 2025.

In these elections, citizens of Kosovo abroad will also be able to vote in embassies and consulates of Kosovo.

Earlier in December, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, announced that there will be 22 mailboxes in 22 different countries where members of the diaspora will be able to vote. Meanwhile, physical voting will be organized in 35 diplomatic and consular missions in 22 countries. The Kosovo diaspora is mainly concentrated in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and other European countries.

In the last population census, for the first time, Kosovo citizens living in the diaspora were included, and according to the Statistics Agency of Kosovo, they are about 550,000 people.
