The UN human rights office has called on the government of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to drop criminal charges against Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski and release him immediately.

Mr. Ales Bialiatski went on trial Thursday in the capital Minsk on charges that human rights activists widely consider trumped-up. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.

Zoti Bialiatski nuk mori pjesë në ceremoninë e ndarjes së çmimeve në tetor pasi ishte në qeli.

UN human rights spokesman Jeremy Laurence says Mr Bialiatski and his colleagues have been detained on charges of funding anti-government protests and breaching public order.

"I'm not a lawyer, so I can't go into technical details about the laws under which the charges against them were brought," said Mr. Laurence. "Suffice it to say that we consider these arrests arbitrary. The accusations are simply politically motivated."

Mr. Laurence emphasized that the human rights office and the special procedures unit are closely following the case in question./ Voa
