This year, 54 journalists have been killed in the world, while they were doing their work, or because of their profession, it was said in the annual report of the international organization, Reporters Without Borders, published on Thursday.
According to the organization, the Israeli military is responsible for the deaths of 18 journalists this year – 16 in Gaza and two in Lebanon.
According to the report, the Palestinian territory is the most dangerous for journalists, as it recorded the highest number of journalists killed in the last five years.
The organization has said that it has sent four reports to the International Criminal Court for "war crimes committed against journalists by the Israeli army".
According to her, "more than 145" journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023, and that 35 of them were working at the time they were killed.
The organization has described the number of murders as "unprecedented bloodshed".
In a separate report, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said 104 journalists were killed in 2024, more than half of them in Gaza.
The two organizations' figures differ because they used different methodologies to calculate the killings.
Reporters Without Borders has included in the list only journalists, for whom it has been proven that their death was related to their professional activity.
Israel has denied that it deliberately killed the journalists, but has admitted that some may have been killed as a result of airstrikes.
After Gaza, the deadliest country for journalists in 2024 was Pakistan, followed by Bangladesh and Mexico.
As of December 1, 550 journalists are in prisons around the world, according to Reporters Without Borders.
The three countries with the largest number of imprisoned journalists are China, Myanmar and Israel./ Rel
