The second round for the presidential elections / Counting of votes in Turkey begins

Turkey held the second round of presidential elections today. A little while ago, the Turkish state officially closed the polls and started counting the votes.

This process will determine the winner of the elections, where the current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the candidate of the opposition coalition, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, compete.

Polls show a close result between the two political rivals.

Meanwhile, in the first round, in the May 14 polls, Erdogan led with a higher percentage of support than his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu, but failed to secure more than 50% of the votes needed to be declared the winner and to avoid a presidential runoff.

We recall that Erdogan won 49.4% of the votes, while the opposition candidate won 44.9% of the votes.

This was the first time in 20 years that he has been in power, that Erdogan did not win the elections in the first round./ CNA.al
