Ukraine asks Germany for Taurus missiles

Ukraine has asked Germany to supply it with Taurus missiles, said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense in Berlin.

These missiles can be launched from ships and have a range of about 500 kilometers.

Germany accepted this request a few days ago, the spokeswoman said, confirming reports by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. She refused to give more details or say whether Germany will supply these missiles to Ukraine.

If Berlin sends these missiles to Kiev, then Germany would follow the example of Britain, which earlier in May became the first country to admit that it has supplied Ukraine with long-range missiles.

The United States has so far refused to supply Ukraine with ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 297 kilometers, after concerns that Ukraine could use them to attack inside Russia's internationally recognized borders.

For months, Ukraine has been asking allies to provide it with these types of weapons, but aid from Western allies has focused on shorter-range weapons.

The Taurus is manufactured by European missile manufacturer MBDA and has the same characteristics as the British Storm Shadow missile.
