Putin orders ceasefire in Ukraine during Orthodox Christmas

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian armed forces to observe a ceasefire along the contact line with Ukrainian troops on January 6 and 7 for the Orthodox Christmas holiday.

In his order, published on the Kremlin's website on January 5, Putin said the ceasefire would begin at noon on January 6 and last until midnight on January 7.

He has called on Kiev to respect this step, to enable civilians living along the contact line to visit churches on Christmas Eve and celebrate the holiday.

Earlier on Thursday, the Russian president told his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that he is open to dialogue with Ukraine if Kiev accepts that the territories occupied by Moscow are Russian territories, the Kremlin announced.

Meanwhile, according to Ankara's announcement, Erdogan asked Putin to declare a "unilateral" ceasefire in Ukraine.

Putin's cease-fire order came after earlier on January 5, Russia's spiritual leader, Patriarch Kirill, called for a cease-fire agreement during Orthodox Christmas, which is celebrated this week./ REL
