Portugal's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has been accused of sexism after making an inappropriate comment about a girl's cleavage.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was taking a walk during his official visit to Toronto, where some citizens greeted him.

Mother and daughter approached the president and told him that they were of Portuguese origin and both were named Maria.

The 74-year-old jokingly told her that the girl was more beautiful than her mother and that she could catch the flu because of her open cleavage.

"The daughter is more beautiful than the mother. But the girl can catch the flu. Have you seen her cleavage?", he said with a laugh.

But these comments by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa caused controversy in Portugal, forcing the Head of State, who is known for his conservative views, to come out with a reaction. 

"It was not a sexist comment. I don't think so and neither does the young woman or her mother. It wasn't sexist at all," he said.

The Portuguese president said that he shared the joke with other citizens, but only this moment, which was translated as sexism, was posted on the network./ CNA
