Spread of Hepatitis B and C in prisons/ EU adopts framework of preventive measures

EU disease prevention and drugs agencies have jointly launched a series of measures to eliminate viral hepatitis in Europe's prisons.

The initiative by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the European Medicines Agency supports the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

Published ahead of August 10, Prisoners' Justice Day, the guide aims to support hepatitis B and C prevention and care in prisons across Europe.

It is intended for professionals working in prison health care services and provides information on how to organize interventions to prevent and control viral hepatitis in these settings.

The number of prisoners in the EU is around 499,000 in 2023, equivalent to 111 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the European Commission , an increase of 3.2% compared to 2022./ CNA
