For a brief time, Chicago records the worst air quality in the world

Chicago briefly had the worst air quality in the world, according to a global ranking measurement by IQAir.

This extreme air pollution was caused by thick smoke coming from wildfires in Canada, blanketing the region and pushing Chicago's air quality index into "unhealthy" and even "hazardous" territory, according to reports in the Chicago Sun-Times and The Washington Post.

So while Chicago reported having the worst air quality in the world for several hours, this increase was related to smoke from wildfires, not normal city conditions.

The smoke came mainly from fires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. A lingering high-pressure system trapped the smoke across the Midwest, the Post said.

The Sun-Times newspaper reported that during the fire, other major American cities, such as Minneapolis and Detroit, were also ranked among the worst in the world.

Climate change authorities say forest fires could become more frequent, affecting air quality in the future./ CNA
