The European Parliament on Wednesday passed a resolution declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism, citing the vote as Moscow's military attacks on civilian targets such as energy infrastructure, hospitals, schools and shelters violate international law.

The measure is largely symbolic, as the European Union does not have a legal framework to support it. At the same time, the bloc has already imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow reacted with anger to the resolution of the European Parliament.

“Unë propozoj përcaktimin e Parlamentit Evropian si sponsor të idiotësisë”, shkroi zëdhënësja e Ministrisë së Jashtme ruse Maria Zakharova në rrjetin social, “Telegram”.

Presidenti ukrainas Volodymyr Zelenskiy u ka kërkuar Shteteve të Bashkuara dhe vendeve të tjera që ta shpallin Rusinë një sponsor shtetëror të terrorizmit, duke akuzuar forcat e saj për vënien në shënjestër të civilëve, gjë që Moska e mohon.

Sekretari amerikan i Shtetit, Antony Blinken deri më tani ka refuzuar të bëjë këtë, pavarësisht rezolutave në të dy dhomat e Kongresit që i kërkonin të njëjtën gjë.

Departamenti Amerikan i Shtetit aktualisht ka shpallur Kubën, Korenë e Veriut, Iranin dhe Sirinë si sponsorë shtetërorë të terrorizmit, që do të thotë se ato i nënshtrohen ndalimit të eksporteve të mbrojtjes dhe kufizimeve financiare.
