Uncertainty regarding fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz

As part of the agreement to be signed this week, the United States expects Iran not to impose tariffs on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, US Vice President JD Vance said during an interview on June 15.

Vance's interview with CNBC coincided with a new message from US President Donald Trump, who wrote on June 15:

"Ships are starting to move – many of them filled with oil – out of the Strait of Hormuz. Ships are passing along the southern 'highway', which is completely safe."

This claim by Trump could not be independently verified.

Responding to a CNBC question about whether an agreement had been reached with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz without tariffs for an initial period of 60 days or longer, Vice President Vance said: " Our expectation is that the strait will be opened without tariffs for a long period of time. That's something we'll work out in these technical negotiations."

However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said at a press conference that "for a certain period of time, we will organize safe circulation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with the actions of the other side."

"We have always said that we do not intend to collect transit fees, but we will determine and collect the necessary fees for the services we will provide, such as navigation services, environmental protection, perhaps ship insurance and other services that will be provided by Iran and Oman," he stated.

US President Donald Trump has previously stated that an agreement between Washington and Tehran is planned to be signed soon and that the strategic Strait of Hormuz will be reopened.

"The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete," Trump wrote on Truth Social announcing the agreement late Sunday, which will open a 60-day period to allow talks on a more detailed peace agreement between Washington and Tehran.

The US and Israeli attacks on Iran began on February 28, and since the start of the war, the Strait of Hormuz has been virtually closed by Iran. About a fifth of the world's oil and gas shipments pass through this vital waterway./rel
