Orban calls for US-Russia talks on Ukraine: Kiev cannot win

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called on the United States and Russia to hold peace talks to end the war in Ukraine, adding that Kiev cannot win against Moscow's superior force.

During a July 23 speech in neighboring Romania, Orban also criticized the European Union's strategy of imposing sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, saying it was damaging the bloc.

"Only Russia-US talks can end the conflict, because Russia wants security guarantees," Orban said, which only Washington can provide.

The United States and its Western allies engaged in months of intense negotiations with Russia over Kremlin security concerns when Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine on February 24 under the false premise of protecting Russian-speakers in the Donbass. .

A nationalist who has repeatedly clashed with the EU over his growing authoritarian rule, Orban has been a thorn in the side of the bloc since the start of the war, undermining the image of a West fully united against Kremlin aggression.
