US-sanctioned Ukrainian oligarch gets Macedonian citizenship

The Ukrainian oligarch, Oleksandr Onyshenko, who is a fugitive from justice in Ukraine and is sanctioned by the US, has received the citizenship of North Macedonia.

He was put on the US sanctions list on May 31, 2021, because he was part of a Russian network that interfered in the US election. He also has Russian citizenship.

This was announced on Friday, November 11, by VMRO DPMNE MP Antonio Misllososki and the Balkan Investigative Journalism Network, BIRN.

“Jo vetëm narko-mafiozët e njohur Sedat Peker dhe Jovan Vukotiç kanë marrë shtetësi maqedonase. Lista e atyre që kanë paguar ‘taksa më të shtrenjta’ tek Oliveri [Oliver Spasovski, ministri i Punëve të Brendshme] është më e gjatë. Politikani i arratisur ukrainas nën sanksione amerikane, merr shtetësi maqedonase”, ka shkruar Milloshkoski në Facebook.

Sipas të dhënave të Qeverisë, Onyshenko kërkesën për shtetësi maqedonase e ka paraqitur në vitin 2021, me propozim Federatës së Sporteve me Kuaj, ndërsa mendim pozitiv kanë dhënë Agjencia për Rini dhe Sport, por edhe Agjencia e Sigurisë Kombëtare (ANB).

Në mbledhjen e Qeverisë, më 31 maj, vendimi për dhënien e pëlqimit për shtetësi është bazuar në “dosjen e pastër”.

Kërkesa për shtetësi nga ai është bërë si shtetas i Rusisë, pasi përveç shtetësisë ukrainase ai ka pasur edhe shtetësi ruse, raporton BIRN.

Onyshenko, who made his fortune from the gas business, has been on the run since 2016 after being investigated in Ukraine for corruption and money laundering.

After that, he escapes from Ukraine towards Spain.

After Kiev authorities announce the international arrest warrant, Spain decides to extradite him, but Onyshenko manages to be extradited to Germany. In 2020, this state rejected Ukraine's request for extradition.
