The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2023 has been received by Jon Fosse

The Nobel Prize in Literature, widely considered the most prestigious in literature, was awarded Thursday to Norwegian author Jon Fosse "for his groundbreaking plays and prose that give voice to the unspeakable."

The award is given for a writer's entire body of work, with past winners including Toni Morrison, Kazuo Ishiguro and, last year, French writer Annie Ernaux, for books that evoke her personal passions and tragedies.

Along with the prestige and a huge increase in book sales, the laureate receives 11 million Swedish kronor, about $991,000.

In recent years, the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, has tried to increase the diversity of authors considered for the award after facing criticism that only 17 Nobel laureates had been women and that the vast majority were from Europe or North America. / CNA
