The closure of Serbian parallel institutions in the north of Kosovo/ The US

The US Embassy in Kosovo has reacted to today's operation of the Kosovo Police in the north of the country, where the Kosovar authorities closed five parallel Serbian institutions in the north of the country.

In the communique of the US Embassy in Kosovo, the concern and disappointment about the actions of the government of Kosovo is repeated, calling them unilateral.

"On the order of the political authorities of the Government of Kosovo, the Kosovo Police has today, on August 30, conducted operations against institutions supported by Serbia in the north of Mitrovica, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq. Issues related to the structures supported by Serbia in Kosovo should be addressed through EU-facilitated dialogue. This action was not coordinated with any element of the international community.

The United States and our international partners have repeatedly asked the Government of Kosovo to prioritize coordination with the international community and not to take unilateral actions on issues on the EU-facilitated dialogue agenda," the statement said.

According to the embassy, ??the failure of the Kosovo government to respond to the demands reflects a real and growing deterioration of the partnership. It is emphasized that the uncoordinated actions of the Government of Kosovo put the citizens of Kosovo and KFOR soldiers at greater risk, unnecessarily escalate regional tensions and undermine Kosovo's reputation as a reliable international partner.

While the United States Government is proud to have supported the establishment and professionalization of the Kosovo Police over many years as part of our commitment to promote security and stability, the Government's continued instrumentalization of the Kosovo Police to carry out uncoordinated actions is not in accordance with the promise to “continue consultation and coordination with the international community. The Government's actions will also affect the quality and nature of our cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and its subordinate elements", the statement says./ CNA
