The Democratic League of Kosovo has nominated party leader Lumir Abdixhiku as its candidate for Prime Minister of Kosovo in the December 28 extraordinary elections.
"Although I opened the discussion, it did not last long. It was a short discussion. The LDK leadership considers that as long as there is a party leader, there is no need to have another candidate for prime minister, so I nominate me," Abdixhiku said during a press conference on November 24.
Abdixhiku said he received authorization to compile the electoral list, but will not list the candidates.
He warned that the LDK will compete alone, but within the list it will leave space for other individuals and parties, not ruling out the possibility that Fatmir Limaj's Social Democratic Initiative will be included.
Limaj ran on a list with the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo in the past elections and managed to win three seats in the 120-member Assembly.
"LDK will make sure to open part of its list to other parties, including Limaj with its MPs. Talks will be held on this issue in the coming days, but let's say that we are ready. Just as we are ready for other parties, which are the Christian Democrats, the Justice Party, the [Behgjet] Pacolli Alliance. So, we are open to both parties and individuals. So, individuals who want to compete on the LDK list," Abdixhiku added.
The LDK came third in the February 9 parliamentary primary elections, winning 18.27 percent of the vote. In those elections, Abdixhiku was also the party's candidate for prime minister.
He called on other parties "to unite", saying that this "new momentum puts LDK in a position beyond its own base".
Abdixhiku said that now we must "work to avoid the same result that later leads to a blockade," referring to the February 9 elections.
In those elections, Albin Kurti's Vetevendosje Movement won 42.30 percent of the vote. However, this party failed to form a government twice, paving the way for elections. The LDK had rejected Kurti's offer of cooperation in the government./REL
