The Kremlin has reacted to talks of possible security guarantees from the West for Ukraine, warning of a worsening security situation in Europe.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed that security guarantees for Ukraine "would violate the principles of international relations" and should not be made "at the expense of Russia's needs".
"In our opinion, this will only lead to a worsening of the security situation on the European continent," Peskov said on Monday.
Russia has repeatedly claimed that its security is threatened by Ukraine's ambitions to move closer to the West, including by joining the European Union and NATO.
NATO has repeatedly argued that the alliance poses no threat to Russia.
Ukraine hopes to start talks this week with the United States on security guarantees, before joining NATO later.
The head of the Office of the Presidency in Kiev, Andrri Yermak, said on Sunday that the US has made concrete and long-term promises to help Ukraine fight against Russian aggression now and to prevent Russian aggression in the future./REL
