Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he does not oppose the idea of ??peace talks on the issue of Ukraine.

Speaking after the meeting with African leaders in Saint Petersburg, he said that an African and Chinese initiative could serve as a basis for finding peace.

President Putin has also said that it is difficult to implement a ceasefire when the Ukrainian army is on the offensive.

Ukraine and Russia have previously said that they will not sit at the negotiating table without certain preconditions.

Ukraine wants its borders restored to the way they were in 1991, something the Kremlin fiercely rejects.

Moscow declares that in order to start negotiations, Kiev must accept the "new territorial reality" of the state.

Putin said in a conference late on Saturday that there are currently no plans to intensify actions on the Ukrainian front.

He has also defended the Kremlin's decision to arrest political opponents, claiming that they are damaging Russia from within.

The Russia-Africa summit follows the visit of an African contingent - including leaders and representatives from seven countries - to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin last month.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.
