European Championship/ German police strict controls, 603 arrest warrants

Between June 7 and June 28, 2024, the German Federal Police conducted 830,000 police checks.

One of the reasons for this security enforcement is related to the European Championship, organized in German cities between June 14 and July 14.

According to Dieter Romann, head of the Federal Police, 603 arrest warrants have been executed from these border controls, Schengen.News reports .

While some 86 violent hooligans fled, another 85 people were arrested for politically motivated criminality.

Recently, Germany has tightened measures for supporters of terrorist acts. The new measures include the deportation of foreigners who show support for such criminal acts. 

Foreigners represent 58% of prisoners in Germany

Foreigners in German prisons have outnumbered German citizens, increasing by 18 percent in 2023 alone.

There are around 923,000 foreign prisoners in Germany, with the most common nationalities being Turks, Poles, Syrians, Afghans, Algerians and Russians.

Foreigners in prisons in Hamburg, Berlin and Hesse represent between 58 and 51 percent of all inmates, while nationalities can vary./ CNA
