Hungary takes the presidency of the EU

Hungary, led by right-wing nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has taken over the rotating leadership of the European Union from today.

Her government has warned it will focus on seven areas - among them: increasing EU competitiveness, strengthening defense policy, expanding and curbing illegal migration.

"Europe faces common challenges from the war in our neighborhood, global competition, the fragile security situation, illegal migration, natural disasters, the effects of climate change and the demographic situation", said the Hungarian Minister for European Affairs, Janos Boka, during presentation of the priorities of the Hungarian EU presidency last month.

In this task, Hungary succeeds Belgium, which held the presidency of the EU in the first six months of the year.

From January 1 next year, it will transfer this role to Poland.

Expectations are that Kosovo's application for EU membership, made as early as the end of 2022, will not be considered even during the Hungarian presidency./REL
