The Institute of Forensic Medicine announced that in the early hours of June 30, one of its emergency exit corridors was engulfed in fire.

In the announcement of the IML, it was said that the fire was located by the staff and then extinguished by the firefighters.

"According to preliminary assessments, the cause of the fire was an electrical fault in one of the electrical devices in the corridor, but the final opinion will be given after the final expertise, which will be submitted to the Prosecutor's Office. The material damage is small," the announcement said.

Last year, two fires broke out in IML, in March and November.

In the June 30 announcement, IML said the institute's building will undergo renovation once the procurement procedures are completed in early July.

The renovation project, worth 900,000 euros, according to IML, will include "installation of the fire protection system, replacement and repair of the electrical installation, new ventilation and air conditioning, as well as the redesign of the work spaces."

The Institute of Forensic Medicine is responsible for the management and maintenance of the forensic system in the country, to provide forensic services, teaching and support services for the families of missing persons.

Likewise, the IML is tasked with providing forensic expertise for public bodies, leading medical investigations for death at the scene, performing exhumations, performing post-mortem inspections and performing autopsies./ REL
