Phasing out nuclear power/Germany demolishes 2 cooling towers of a former power plant

Two cooling towers of the former nuclear power plant in the Bavarian town of Gundremmingen, Germany, collapsed in a controlled demolition on Saturday.

The two towers, equivalent to approximately 56,000 tons of concrete, were demolished as part of Germany's phase-out of nuclear power.

The power plant had served as an important landmark in the city for nearly six decades, bringing numerous new jobs and boosting the local economy.

As part of the country's phase-out of nuclear power and in accordance with Germany's energy transition policy, Gundremmingen, as well as the Brokdorf and Grohnde nuclear power plants, were decommissioned in December 2021.

Closing the power plant was a difficult step and decision, yet thousands of people gathered to watch the removal of the two towers from the city's skyline. /CNA
