Robbery highlights security flaws/ Louvre moves some of its most valuable jewels

The Louvre has transferred some of its most precious jewels to the Bank of France. The move comes after a spectacular robbery last week exposed the weakness of the famous museum's security.

The transfer of several precious items from the museum's Apollo gallery, which houses the French crown jewels, took place on Friday under the escort of secret police, French radio station RTL reported.

The Bank of France, which stores the country's gold reserves in a massive vault 27 meters underground, is just 500 meters from the Louvre, on the right bank of the Seine River.

Thieves stole eight prized works worth an estimated $102 million from the Louvre's collection on October 19, highlighting security shortcomings as they entered the world's most visited museum by using a crane to access the top floor during the museum's opening hours.

After stealing the jewels, the thieves fled on motorbikes, while investigations to identify and capture them continue. News of the robbery echoed around the world, causing reflection in France on what some considered a national humiliation./CNA
