Chinese hackers target the Trump family and President Biden's advisers

Members of former President Donald Trump's family and officials from President Biden's administration are among those targeted by China-linked hackers. According to the New York Times newspaper, which cited individuals with knowledge of the event, hackers were able to break into the systems of telecommunications companies.

The newspaper report said State Department officials, members of the Trump family, including Eric Trump and Jared Kushner, and prominent Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, were among those who were targeted by cyber spies.

Concerns have grown about the hacker group following media reports last month.

On October 6, the Wall Street Journal reported that the group, nicknamed Salt Typhoon, had infiltrated the networks of telecommunications companies and obtained data from systems used by the federal government for court-authorized wiretapping.

The State Department and representatives of Trump family members did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Nor have the White House, the National Security Agency or the federal agency that oversees cyber security commented. The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment, although Beijing has consistently denied being behind the cyber espionage campaigns./ VOA
