Although a small town Whittier in Alaska is very special because all its residents live in a single building. The small southwestern Alaskan town is cut off from the outside world in many ways.

CNN reports that residents don't even have to leave the building they live in if they don't want to.

In Whittier, the hospital, school and city government operate within a self-sufficient structure described as a Cold War giant.

The 14-story Begich Towers Incorporated, otherwise known simply as BTI, is probably the last thing you'd expect to see in such a remote location.

BTI endures six months of rain every year, followed by six months of snow and howling winds. This building was built to survive the bombing.

Inside BTI it feels like any massive apartment complex in a big city.

About 220 people live inside this building throughout the year. They work mainly in commercial fishing, recreation and tourism or for state ferries and railways.

About their life together, they say: "We are all family here. A big family. With lots of love"  .
