Body of missing US soldier found in Lithuania

The body of a fourth U.S. soldier who was reported missing has been found near Pabrades, Lithuania, the U.S. Army said in a statement on April 1.

Search and rescue operations, supported by international cooperation and advanced technology, lasted for several days after a military vehicle carrying four American soldiers sank in a swampy area on March 25.

The bodies of three American soldiers, as well as their M88A2 Hercules armored vehicle, were found the day before.

"This week has been devastating. Today, our hearts carry the weight of unbearable pain with the loss of our soldier," said Major General Christopher Norrie.

The search had intensified in the last 24 hours with the arrival of specialized personnel and equipment. Rescue dogs and two advanced drone systems assisted in the search operation.

Hundreds of soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division, along with U.S. Navy divers, the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Polish engineers, Estonian military police, multinational civilian agencies, and technical experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers participated in the search operation.

The names of the dead soldiers have not been made public pending official notification to their families.

An investigation has been launched into the tragedy. Authorities are examining the circumstances leading up to the incident, including the terrain, weather conditions and the condition of the vehicle.

The disappearance of the vehicle and soldiers prompted a massive international rescue operation, and Major General Curtis Taylor expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the operation.

"We cannot thank enough our allies and colleagues, especially the Lithuanians, who spared no resources to support this mission," he said. "Together, we kept our promise to never leave a fallen soldier behind."

Lithuania, a member of NATO and the European Union, is host to more than 1,000 US troops who are stationed in the Baltic state on a rotational basis./ REL
