Gaetz retires as US attorney general

Matt Gaetz has withdrawn from the nomination for the post of attorney general of the United States.

Former lawmaker Gaetz himself confirmed the news, saying that his confirmation process has turned into a distraction.

In a message on the X Network, Gaetz said he had great meetings the day before with senators and expressed appreciation for their thoughts and support.

He said it had become clear, however, that the confirmation had been unfairly turned into a distraction for the vital work of the transition team for the incoming Trump-Vance administration.

"I had great meetings with senators yesterday. I appreciate their feedback — and the tremendous support of so many. While the momentum is strong, it's clear that my confirmation would unfairly distract from the critical work of Trump and Vance's transition

There is no time to waste in an unnecessarily prolonged tussle in Washington, so I will withdraw my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General," he wrote.
