Leaders of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning group of atomic bomb survivors warned Saturday that the risk of nuclear war is growing, and renewed calls for the abandonment of nuclear weapons.
"The international situation is deteriorating, and now wars are being waged under the threat of using nuclear weapons," said Shigemitsu Tanaka, a survivor of the US bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, and co-leader of the Nihon Hidankyo group.
"I fear that we as human beings are on the road to self-destruction. The only way to prevent this is through the abandonment of nuclear weapons," he said.
While honoring the survivors, the Norwegian Nobel Committee mentioned the devastation left behind by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the group's long work, over many decades, to keep the world from using nuclear weapons.
The committee said the group's efforts are of critical importance to the world today, without naming any country specifically.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled last month that Moscow could consider a nuclear response if the United States and its allies allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons to attack Russia.
