Massive flood evacuations / Washington declares state of emergency

A river has overflowed its banks in Washington state, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. The widespread flooding has affected communities and caused dramatic consequences.

The National Weather Service confirmed the unusually strong storm, which dumped more than 12 inches of rain on parts of western and central Washington this week. Rivers swelled to historic levels, flooding cities and farmland.

Emergency crews carried out dozens of rescues, as people were rescued from rooftops and vehicles.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency. The federal government approved the request for assistance. National Guard troops were deployed to help with evacuations in hard-hit areas like Burlington.

Researchers note that climate change is intensifying such extreme rainfall events. While no single event is directly linked, warmer air holds more moisture. This leads to more frequent and severe river flooding events. /CNA
