Last for this year/ Trump gathers cabinet amid controversy over attacks on drug ships

US President Donald Trump held his last cabinet meeting for the year on Tuesday.

Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed new details about an attack on a suspected drug ship in September, which has sparked fierce criticism and calls for investigations.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed Monday that a second attack occurred, although she said a Navy admiral, not Hegseth, gave the command to strike the ship again.

Hegseth detailed his involvement in the operation, saying he watched the first attack live. He said he saw no survivors in the water and was not watching when the admiral in charge of the operation ordered a follow-up attack. But he added that the admiral, Frank Bradley, made the right decision and had "full authority to order the second attack."

The president said he was unaware of the second attack at the time. He also said the US would begin carrying out those ground attacks, raising the possibility of deeper military involvement against Venezuela. /CNA
