Several injured after a knife attack in western Germany

A major police operation is underway in the German city of Dusburg, as several people have been injured following a knife attack at a fitness center.

The police said that the situation is still unclear.

A police spokesman has confirmed that the operation is being carried out by the police of the nearby city of Esen, and citizens have been urged to avoid the area of ??the attack.

"We are at the scene of the attack with reinforcements," the Esen City Police said on Twitter.

The public broadcaster WDR has reported that the two perpetrators of the attack stabbed visitors to a fitness center.
