Turin's streets "burn"/ Clashes between protesters and police, 9

Clashes between protesters and police have been reported at a protest that took place this afternoon in Turin. The demonstration was organized in protest against the evacuation of the “Askatasuna” social center, which took place three days ago, by decision of the Italian Ministry of the Interior.

Some of the protesters threw fireworks, bottles and set fire to garbage cans, which they moved into the middle of the street. Police used tear gas, batons and fire pumps to disperse the protesters. According to Italian media, another unspecified number of protesters were injured, while police announced, at the same time, that at least nine officers were injured. 

Over two thousand people took part in the protest that started from Palazzo Nuovo. Many young people and families, residents of the Vanchiglia neighborhood, were present, as well as children holding banners with their handprints. Groups of protesters arrived from other cities, including Milan, Genoa and the Northeast.

"Askatasuna means freedom, no one will stop us" and "Woe to anyone who touches us" were some of the slogans chanted by the protesters. /CNA
