Tensions Escalate/ US Seizes Another Ship Off Venezuela's Coast

The United States has stopped and seized a ship off the coast of Venezuela. The operation comes just days after US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

The ship's detention would also mark the second time in recent weeks that the United States has seized a tanker near Venezuela, and it comes amid a large US military buildup in the region.

US officials who confirmed the information to Reuters did not specify where the operation is taking place, only that the Coast Guard is leading it.

"I am ordering a complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers going to or from Venezuela," Trump said on Tuesday.

Following the seizure of the first tanker near Venezuela last week, an informal embargo has been in effect, with ships carrying millions of barrels of oil remaining in Venezuelan waters to avoid seizure. /CNA
