The CDU party that currently holds power won 34.6 percent of the vote in Hesse, which is an increase of 7.6 percent compared to the 2018 election. Boris Rhein will therefore remain in office. After winning the elections in this country, the 51-year-old Christian Democrat spoke about a clear government mandate. Rhein offered talks on possible cooperation with the SPD and the Greens, as well as the FDP.

According to preliminary results, the Greens, the CDU's coalition partner in the Wiesbaden-based state parliament for ten years, achieved 14.8 percent of the vote. Mathematically, the ecologists can continue governing with the CDU despite the losses (minus five percent).

Election day is bittersweet for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD and the liberals. The Social Democrats with their main candidate Nancy Faeser (minister of the interior at the federal level), achieved their worst result in history with the SPD of the state of Hesse with only 15.1 percent of the vote (minus 4.7 percent). Faeser spoke of a "very disappointing" election result.

FDP is still in fluctuation of the threshold for representation in the parliament. According to unofficial results, she won 5.0 percent (minus 2.5 percent). While the second largest force in this country will be the Alternative for Germany, the extreme right AfD, which won 18.4 percent (an increase of 5.3 percent).

Possible coalitions

Mathematically, it is possible not only to continue in power between the CDU and the ecologists, but also the coalition between the CDU and the SPD. The right-wing AfD is not preferred in coalition combinations.
