Bolton: China is a global threat

Former national security adviser John Bolton said Saturday in Taiwan's capital, Taipei, that China poses a global threat.

Mr. Bolton is in Taiwan at the invitation of pro-Taiwan independence groups, including the Taiwan Nation Alliance and the Formosan Public Affairs Association.

"We don't need to speculate about this threat. "Beijing issues threats to Taiwan almost every day, making continuous and unceasing efforts to delegitimize Taiwan through the severing of bilateral diplomatic relations," he said.

"The Chinese threat is global, I think it's important to reiterate that," said the former national security adviser.

Mr. Bolton also spoke about "the crackdown Beijing has undertaken on Hong Kong, violating the agreement on control of the island reached with Great Britain more than 30 years ago."

He gave other examples like the One Belt One Road initiative that extends to Latin America and Africa.”

"We need to show China and Russia what the consequences are if they take action against Taiwan," Bolton said.

Mr. Bolton is expected to meet with the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen on Monday./VOA
