Biden: New migrant restrictions will secure US-Mexico border

Migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally could be denied the chance to seek asylum and quickly be deported to Mexico, based on new restrictions announced by the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.

The new measures will come into effect immediately, but they will not apply to unaccompanied children, people with serious health problems, or victims of trafficking, said a senior official of the US administration.

"I came here to do what Republicans in Congress have refused to do, take the necessary steps to secure our border," Biden said at the White House.

"Let's solve the problem and not fight about it."

Biden, a Democrat, has toughened his approach to border security as immigration has emerged as a top issue for Americans in the Nov. 5 presidential election.

Biden is expected to face the former US president, Donald Trump, who has vowed to take tough measures to fight migration, if he wins another mandate.

Biden began his presidential term in 2021 with promises to overturn Trump's immigration policies, but in the meantime he has faced record levels of migrants who have crossed the border illegally.

The new restrictive measures "will increase the consequences for those who cross the border illegally," said a senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

However, he said the new asylum restrictions are not permanent.

They will be activated when the average number of apprehensions at the border exceeds 2,500 in a week, and will be paused when apprehensions drop to 1,500 per day.

The last time the figure fell below 1,500 arrests per day was in the first months after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, in July 2020, when travel globally was very small.

The average number of arrests at US borders was 4,300 in a single day in April.

The new restrictions are expected to be challenged in court by immigrant rights groups, which have criticized Biden for adopting Trump-type policies./ REL
