The Australian Army will also accept foreign recruits

The Australian Defense Force (ADF) will also allow recruits from foreign countries in its ranks, the Ministry of Defense of this country announced.

Australia has, for years, struggled with low soldier enrollments.

This, according to officials, is a consequence of the low level of unemployment.

The latest figures of the Government estimate that the Defense Force has a shortage of about 4,400 troops.

From July, New Zealand citizens who are permanent residents of Australia can apply to join the Australian Army, while from next year residents from the UK and other countries, including USA and Canada.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said these changes "are essential in the face of security challenges over the next decade and beyond".

Canberra has repeatedly expressed concern about China's perceived hostile actions.
