The European Union will give Tunisia 105 million euros for 2023 to curb irregular migration, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday.
The money is intended to support Tunisia in border management, search and rescue, and counter-smuggling operations, Von der Leyen said in Tunis.
This financial support is almost three times more than the average annual migration-related funding that the EU allocated to Tunisia in the last two years, Von der Leyen said.
Von der Leyen said it is in the common interest of the EU and Tunisia to stop smugglers and migrant traffickers.
The head of the European Commission made these comments after her joint meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Tunisian President Kais Saied.
European representatives have advanced efforts to reach an agreement with Tunisia to prevent the departure of migrant boats from its territory./ Rel
