Austria and Switzerland are "hit" by avalanches/ Ten people lose their lives

During this weekend, ten people have lost their lives from several avalanches in the Austrian and Swiss Alps.

Avalanches have fallen in various ski resorts, while the victims are mainly tourists from New Zealand, China and Germany.

Austrian authorities raised the alarm. But despite the warnings, ski resorts in western Austria are packed due to school holidays in Vienna.

5 of the avalanche fatalities were reported today and among them was a snowplow in the western region of Tyrol.

The other victims were mainly ski vacationers and a ski guide.

The BBC reports that avalanches are common in the Tyrol region, where 30 fell yesterday alone.

Austrian authorities have warned of very large avalanches and have advised inexperienced skiers to stay on slopes and open ski trails, while experienced skiers stay away from very steep terrain./ BA - CNA.al
