Pakistan blocks Wikipedia page

Pakistani authorities have blocked access to the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, on the grounds that it has not removed content it considers blasphemous.

Images depicting the Prophet Muhammad are considered blasphemous to many Muslims.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority gave Wikipedia a 48-hour warning to remove the content it requested and then blocked the site.

"The platform has been given the opportunity to react, but it has not acted and removed the blasphemous content, nor has it appeared before the authorities," said a Pakistani spokesperson.

This decision has provoked the anger of many users of social networks.

"The ban on Wikipedia is unconstitutional and quite ridiculous," said Usama Khilji, a digital rights activist in Pakistan.

"This decision will affect students, the academy, the public health sector, researchers, it will reduce the will to invest in Pakistan, after the ambiguities and arbitrary censorship," he said.

He said that Wikipedia is a platform where anyone who has an account can access and change materials and that the Pakistani authorities were able to do this, instead of imposing a blockade.

YouTube and other sites have also faced blockades several times in Pakistan, on the grounds that they have immoral content./REL
