Air attack alert in Kiev during the visit of European leaders

Air raid sirens sounded across Ukraine on Friday as President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Union leaders held a high-level meeting in Kiev to further discuss sanctions against Russia and Ukraine's prospects for EU membership.

Commission and council leaders from the EU's 27 member states traveled to Kiev to show support for Ukraine as the one-year anniversary of the start of Russia's attack approaches.

"There will be no decline in our determination. We will also support you at every step during your journey to the EU", said Charles Michel, president of the European Council.

After the alarm sirens went off, there were no immediate reports of missile strikes, attacks that have been repeated regularly in recent months against Ukraine's energy infrastructure and far from the war front in the country's east and south.

President Zelensky is calling for stronger punitive measures against Russia from the European Union, although the new sanctions being prepared by the EU do not meet the demands of the Ukrainian government.

Kiev applied for EU membership just days after Russia launched its offensive last year. The European Union has welcomed the application, although it has discouraged Ukraine's calls for an acceleration of the membership process while the country is at war./ VOA
