Scandal! Child dies in maternity ward two days after birth, doctors harm him

A serious incident occurred on July 27, 2021 at the "Koço Gliozheni" Maternity Hospital in Tirana. A newborn girl died after two days, after gynecologists used a device called Forceps to remove the baby.

The baby was injured in the head, and after two days it did not come out. Adelina Zeqiri, the baby's mother, says that during her pregnancy she was followed by Dr. Aida Hoxha and that her and the child's progress were without problems. Since the baby was overweight, Adelina and the doctor had decided that the birth would be done by surgery. But the young woman started having pains sooner, so she went to the maternity ward.

"In July 2021, I lost my daughter in childbirth and it was completely the doctors' fault. During the 9 months of pregnancy, I had no problems whatsoever. I was only followed by Dr. Aida Hoxha, every time she was there I went for an ultrasound, even at dinner at 5:00 in the afternoon my waters broke and I went straight to the maternity ward. Dr. Aida was not on duty and told me to go there, because I had left a message for Dr. Ervis Vates. He met us there and told us not to worry about anything. We went to the maternity ward, the doctor knew that the baby was quite heavy, I had to have a visit 3 days ago and on Thursday after 3 days I had to go again to set the date for the surgery because I had decided that I would give birth by surgery. But work did not wait."

Her doctor was not on duty, but delegated Adelina to her colleague Ervis Vata. That day, the young woman was left without any intervention from the medical staff.

"I kept asking the doctor if he had spoken to Dr. Aida because I couldn't give birth alone, the baby was quite large in weight. The only answer I got from the doctors was that I would give birth on the next shift. The next shift, the doctor I followed came and I stayed all night, no insistence, not even the midwife helped me at all. When I told her, "Oh my God," I went to the stage where I was just vomiting blood and had no resistance. I told them about the simulator and the operation and they told me that you would give birth on the next shift. When I told the midwife, "Oh my God, call the doctor because I'm dying," she put her hand on the table and told me that I was falling asleep. Her name was Moza."

The next day, when the doctor who had attended to Adelina arrived, the latter was too tired from the pain to give birth herself or to cope with the operation. At this point, Dr. Aida Hoxha anesthetized her and removed the baby through Forceps, a metal device like a spoon.

"Doctors came in droves, they came to check and said that she was not ready to give birth. I had called the doctor 2-3 times and when she came at 7:00 in the morning she was completely clueless. She told me I knew she had given birth, you haven't given birth yet. She insisted, but it was impossible until the room was full, with doctors and midwives. She started to talk to them about why they had left me in that condition, because I had reached the point where I could neither give birth myself nor be put into surgery. Since I was in labor, they gave me anesthesia. They put me to sleep there and insisted on giving birth with Forceps, which is not permissible if you don't know how to use it. I was asleep only when I was mentioned that everything was over. They didn't show me the baby because they had put her in intensive care. From the equipment they had used, the child had damage to the head. The damage was visible because it was black. I also have a photo, which I took. It was 1 day "...and a half hours in intensive care and she wasn't responding at all. The doctors didn't tell me anything, they didn't give me any hope, they just told me that 48 hours had to pass. No one took responsibility, until the time came when they disconnected the equipment completely. Everything was over. The doctor disappeared, she wasn't in the maternity ward at all for 2 days."

After the newborn baby did not make it, the case was referred to Police Station No. 1, as the family members accused the maternity ward staff of losing the child.

"The police came, my husband made a statement and it turned out to be negligent treatment. It's been 4 years and they haven't received a single complaint, not even a single thing. We have pursued it with 3 lawyers and none of them has taken it to the end, as the Forensic Medicine has not yet submitted the expert report to the Prosecutor's Office to continue pursuing it. The children were autopsied and we don't know the results, because I was still in the maternity ward with my relatives, while my husband went to Korça to bury the girl. The inspector had told him to continue where you were going because I will pursue this case. I will send everything to the Prosecutor's Office."

OPGJ Sokol Çollaku immediately requested that the Institute of Forensic Medicine conduct an autopsy on the baby. The materials were passed on to the prosecution and the case was assigned to prosecutor Mirela Mërtiri, who was removed from the ranks of the judiciary by vetting.

No one knows why she did not request the autopsy report from the Forensic Medicine. Recently, for almost 8 months, this case has been passed to a prosecutor, Bledar Valikaj, who also does not have an answer for the baby's autopsy, 4 years after the accident./ tvklan.al
