Veliaj demands the closure of CNA/ AGSH reacts harshly: Violation of media

CNA denounced a flagrant case, where Mayor Erion Veliaj demands the closure of CNA, reporting denunciatory articles about him.

Regarding this flagrant case, the Albanian Journalists Association has reacted strongly, emphasizing that reporting media content through online platform mechanisms, when it aims to limit or close a critical medium, constitutes a disturbing practice that can seriously violate freedom of the media and expression.

AGSH recalls that disagreement with editorial content or media criticism should not be addressed through administrative pressure, false reporting, or mechanisms that jeopardize the existence of a media outlet.

"Any allegations of legal violations must be handled in a transparent and proportionate manner, respecting national and international standards for media freedom," the AGSH response states.

AGSH's reaction

The Journalists' Association of Albania expresses its concern regarding reports that the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has requested the closure of the CNA portal, through reporting articles critical of him, with the allegation of copyright infringement.

According to public information, the reported article is a political article from 2024, representing a public position and containing source quotes, as well as visual materials that are claimed to have been used with permission and in accordance with legal rights.

In this context, AGSH assesses that reporting media content through online platform mechanisms, when it aims to limit or close a critical medium, constitutes a worrying practice that can seriously violate freedom of the media and expression.
